Applications of the Sentry MDU System
|
|
A wide array of sporting events and outdoor activities can benefit from
the participants being connected to the Sentry MDU network. In organized events
the sponsors can monitor (via GPS) the location of various participants on the course. The
ability of course officials to remotely activate live-streaming video from participants and course spotters will
improve safety and reduce rules violations. As you can imagine, it is helpful for the Event Coordinator to know
where participants and team members are at all times.
Simply installing the SentryMDU App (free to download) onto a standard Android cell phone
and the user now has a versatile communication device complete with HD video recording,
live streaming and GPS tracking, No longer will a user have to carry a separate sports
camera to record their activities ... the cell phone in their pocket, together with
the SentryMDU App, will now be the tool to record and share a variety of sport and outdoor activites.
As explained in the User Manual, the SentryMDU System will continue
to function with a loss of cellular (or WiFi) signal. GPS readings
and video will still be stored locally on the device and transmitted
once network coverage is re-established. Obviously, live-streaming
will be suspended until network connectivity is re-established.
The device can be configured for complete “standalone”
operation in the event that no cellular or WiFi coverage is
anticipated (ie wilderness areas).
Coordinators of organized events may also consider using the Sentry MDU System as
a revenue stream. Event sponsors can license the Sentry MDU System from DLT for single events
and a specific number of participants. The event sponsors would then charge a nominal fee
to race participants (and supporters) to “register” them in the system. This would allow race
participants to live-stream video and GPS position from their bike to supporters and family members.

Situations where the Sentry MDU System can be of value to Sporting and Outdoor Activities:
- Tracking the location of Event Support Resources
Sponsors of outdoor sporting events generally use a mix of employees and volunteers
to assist with participant registration, monitoring the race course, assist
with safety incidents, crowd control, etc. Simply have all support staff
install the SentryMDU App on their smartphone, register them in the system and
now Event Officials will know where all support personnel are located.
Event coordinators can now monitor live-streaming video from support personnel
that are strategically located around the race course.
Bicycle Racing (both roadcourse and off-road)
Most bicycle riders have and carry cell phones with them. In this example, race participants
would simply download/install the SentryMDU App on their cell phone, register on the
Sentry MDU Data Server, mount the phone using a handlebar “bike mount”
and they will be ready to stream live video from their bicycle. In
addition, participants may choose to record the complete race (inlcuding video, GPS
track, etc) for playback and analysis at a later time. Of course, supporters,
family members, the pit crew team and bystanders can also monitor their progress
on the race course.
Winter sports (skiing, snowboarding, etc.)
Many ski areas currently have active cellular coverage. Skiers and snowboarders simply
install the SentryMDU App on their cell phone, register on the system and now they
can have the advanced communications features of the Sentry MDU System available to them.
If you only want others (friends, family) to know your location on the ski slopes, then
you may leave your phone in your pocket and the GPS feature will still work to show
your location to others (those you have designated to have access). If you wish to
steam live video (or record video, GPS track, etc.) for viewing by family or
friends, then buy one of the many “chest mount” cell phone holders (waterproof)
, clip onto your ski jacket and you are ready to go.
Off-Road Activities (Motocross, 4-Wheeling, Trials Riding)
Whether it is sanctioned events or recreational riding, the Sentry MDU system will
allow users to record off-road activities, stream live video to others and relay the GPS
location of riders to other users. In locations where cell service is not available
(ie wilderness areas) the device can run in “standalone” mode and function
as a sports camera. In this mode (no internet service) the device will still provide the GPS position
of the rider shown on a satellite map overlay. No more getting lost.
Hiking in parks and wilderness areas
The Sentry MDU system will allow hikers and explorers to record their wilderness adventures,
stream live video to others and relay their GPS location to others as necessary.
In locations where cell service is not available (ie wilderness areas) the device
can be switched to run in “standalone” mode and function as a sports
camera and GPS device. In this mode (no internet service) the device will still
provide the hiker their GPS position on the SentryMDU satellite map. No more getting lost.
Water Sports (Jet Ski, Rowing, Boating)
The Sentry MDU system will allow watercraft operators to record their outings,
stream live video to others (see that BIG fish that got away) and allow others to see their GPS location.
In areas where cell service is not available (ie offshore) the device
can be switched to run in “standalone” mode and function as a sports
camera and GPS device. In this mode (no internet service) the device will still
record video (stored on the local device) and provide the GPS position of the
boat on the SentryMDU satellite map. No more getting lost.
Extreme Sports (Parachute jumps, Hang Gliding, Parasailing, Rock Climbing)
With a variety of available mounting devices to hold a cell phone, the applications for
documenting extreme sports are endless. Since most people currently have cell phones
all that is needed is the SentryMDU App and registration on the SentryMDU
Data Server. You now have the ability to not only record video of the event but to
stream “live” video to others in real-time. The SentryMDU System also
takes advantage of the fact that most cell phones are loaded with sensors. You may
record (and transmit) GPS location, acceleration, barometric pressure and more.

The following picture illustrates how “live” video gets transmitted from race participants out on the
course back to the Race Operations Center. In addition, it shows that spectators and supporters
have the ability to view the live video and GPS location of participating riders.

Mounting and/or wearing the cell phone
|
|
Since the Sentry MDU System starts with a cell phone it is simply a matter of deciding
how a User wants to mount or wear the device. Depending on the desired application there are
cases/mounts for almost every sport. You will find waterproof cases, bicycle handlebar
mounts, chest mounts, belt clips, harness clips, suction cup mounts and more.
The one that works best for you will generally come down to personal choice.
